The Young African Kidney Project (YAKIP) project is a preventive and
supportive measures for young people aged 11-18 of
African origin. Preventive measures would chronic
disease management, awareness of complication, healthy
living, use of psychosocial support from trained
counsellors including support from nutritionists and
therapists.
Supportive measures would involve activities such as
bringing parents and children together. We will also
provide frequent holiday parties including music,
food, entertainment and we invite children on dialysis
and who have had kidney transplants to attend. Trips
to local amusement parks will be arranged, as are
outings to sport and leisure activities and selected
sightseeing opportunities. We will also arrange for
children (those with and those without kidney disease)
to come together and learn from each other and do
activities together so that they can appreciate each
other's situation.
