UNITED KINGDOM
The Kidney Alliance was formed jointly by
the
Renal
Association and the National Kidney Federation in 1998 with the
support of the British Renal Symposium. The aim was to bring
together patients' voice and professionals committed to renal
medicine
BKPA for support, advice and, perhaps more
importantly, financial help and assistance towards a holiday with
their families at the BKPA's holiday
dialysis
centre on Jersey.

Diabetes
UK is the leading charity working for people with diabetes. It
funds research, campaigns and helps people to live with the
condition.
Their mission is to improve the lives of people with diabetes and
to work towards a future without diabetes.
The Gift of Life Commemorative Trust provide
an educational facility to schools and the general public,
informing them of the benefits of organ and tissue donation,
therefore increasing the number of people on the national organ
donor register.
They also help recipients, donor families, and any one involved in
transplantation
by providing recreational facilities or other leisure time
activities with a view of improving their conditions of life.
TIME is an executive group of over thirty
charities which have members on the waiting lists for transplants.
The organisation is dedicated to increasing public awareness of
the benefits of organ donation. It is responsible for the
organisation of National Transplant Week.

individuals living with kidney and related diseases. By funding
research, caring for patients and raising awareness of kidney
disease.

NHS with a UK-wide remit, their key role is to ensure that donated
organs are matched and allocated in a fair and unbiased way.
Matching, particularly in the case of kidneys, is so important
that donation and allocation needs to be organised nationally. The
larger the pool the better the likelihood of a good match.
The Unrelated Live Transplant Regulatory
Authority was set up under the Human Organ Transplants Act 1989 to
approve all transplant operations involving a
living donor
who is not a close blood relative of the recipient.
This authority was established to oversee
the development of xenotransplantation in the UK.
Xenotransplantation is the transplantation of tissue and organs
between different species, in this case the transplantation of
animal tissue into humans.

The aim of the British Heart Foundation (BHF)
is to play a leading role in the fight against heart disease so
that it is no longer a major cause of disability and premature
death by funding research, providing support and information,
educating the public and health professionals and promoting
training in emergency life support skills.
The British Lung Foundation is the only
charity in the UK that funds research into the prevention,
diagnosis, treatment and cure of all lung diseases. By unlocking
the secrets of the lung, we're taking huge steps towards finding
cures for the 40-plus lung conditions in existence.

The Transplant Support Network is a
nationwide network of volunteer transplant patients and their
carers, who provide locally based support for others coping with
transplantation.
The aim of the Transplant Support Network is
to introduce any patient, carer or family member to others who
have been through a similar experience. It offers reassurance and
companionship when it is needed.
