Background
African Resource for Kidney Diseases (AFREKID)
was founded on 30th March 2005 by Graciano Masauso, a kidney patient
attending transplant clinic at Norwich & Norfolk University
Hospital
to
provide support to others and promote organ donation among
African communities.
Graciano
Masauso, a
kidney transplant patient invited fellow patients to met regularly
to share their common experiences and challenges associated with
organ donation shortage from their communities, waiting and
receiving an organ transplant.
Graciano's experience of dialysis in Zimbabwe and subsequent
transplant in South Africa has also inspired him to help others in
Africa.
About AFREKID
Founded in 2005, AFREKID is dedicated
to preventing kidney and urinary tract diseases, improving the
health and well-being of African individuals and families affected
by these diseases and increasing the availability of all organs for
transplantation. AFREKID develops and delivers programs to African
communities and individuals in Africa and the UK. Leading these
efforts are more than 200 volunteers from all walks of life.
Together they bring help and hope to the millions Africans who
suffer from kidney and urologic diseases through patient and
community services and advocacy, public and professional education,
research and organ donation programs.
AFREKID is proud to be Africa’s
leader in initiating renal replacement therapy programmes and promoting organ and tissue donation. Through
our service and educational programmes the organisation increases
public awareness of the need, supports those involved in the organ
donation process and provides education and services to transplant
recipients.
Governance
AFREKID is governed by a
Board of Trustees
who come from different racial, ethnic and cultural
background. Some of our Board members are service users on
dialysis or with a kidney / combined pancreas transplant.
Board members represent each of
Africa's regions and United Kingdom. We have also co-opted
members and from the medical, health and social care
background. AFREKID is currently
managed by a dedicated
staff team.
