DEPARTMENT
OF HEALTH AWARDS GRANT
TO AFREKID
The Department
of Health has awarded a 3-year grant to AFREKID for public
awareness of circulatory conditions with focus on high blood
pressure and kidney disease encouraging people seek help
earlier when they have symptoms but importantly to emphasise on
prevention and early detection. High blood pressure is one of
the two leading cause of kidney failure in African communities.

PROJECT
AFREKID will form part of Africa Health Drive (AHD) to raise
profile of Health for All.
Graciano will be driving
over 50,000 miles with a team of volunteers across Africa

MYH9 GENE VARIATIONS & KIDNEY DISEASE IN AFRICANS
New research on the MYH9 gene—and its implications for the
screening and possible prevention of kidney disease in the African
American population—was summarized in a press briefing at the American
Society of Nephrology's 41st Annual Meeting and Scientific Exposition in
Philadelphia, PA on 7 November 2008. These
discoveries have major public health implications because of the high
frequency of MYH9 variants among African Americans with kidney disease: up
to 60 percent, compared with four percent of Caucasian.
